Being an entrepreneur is a challenging journey, and so is being a mother. Combining both roles can be even more daunting. However, with the right strategies and mindset, you can be a successful entrepreneur and a loving mother. I live by these four ways to balance these roles effectively without compromising on either.
1. Prioritize and Time Management:
One of the key skills in being a successful entrepreneurial mother is effective time management. To excel in both areas of your life, prioritize your tasks and responsibilities. Create a schedule that accommodates your business needs and your family’s requirements. Identify your most productive hours and allocate them to your work while ensuring dedicated quality time with your children. Utilize time management tools and techniques to streamline your day and minimize time wastage.
For example, I can’t do any focused work on my computer when my toddler is around. So I plan all my focus hours for her school times and nap times. And then the other things on my to do list; groceries, dishwasher, laundry, vacuum, I plan to do when she IS around and I am always sure to include her in the chore! She loves switching the laundry over and following me with a Swiffer while I vaccuum! It’s a win-win, really 😉
2. Delegate and Seek Support:
You don’t have to do it all on your own. Delegation is crucial for your success as an entrepreneurial mother. Hire qualified professionals, outsource tasks, or involve family members to share the responsibilities. Building a reliable support network, which includes trusted childcare providers or family members, can help you focus on your business without neglecting your children’s needs. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.
Every Thursday Gigi picks Declyn up from school and takes her for a “gigi day” so that I am able to have a longer, more focused work day! I also hired my favorite person in the world right now to help me with admin tasks, and retainer clients. If you need a junior designer or VA, That Brand Design Girl is your girl!
3. Set Realistic Goals:
Being a successful entrepreneur and mother is about finding balance. Set realistic and achievable goals for both your business and your family life. Understand that you might not be able to give 100% of your time and energy to each aspect at all times. There will be moments when your business requires more attention, and there will be times when your family needs you. Be flexible in your approach and maintain a growth mindset that allows you to adapt and overcome challenges.
4. Self-Care and Mindfulness:
I know, I know, we hear this one all the time as moms!! Sometimes I get so tired of hearing it because sometimes working is self-care for me because I get to flex my creative muscles. And sometimes going to the pool with my kids is self-care because we all love being in the sun!!
But, in the hustle of managing a business and family life, it’s easy to forget about self-care. However, taking care of yourself is essential for your well-being and success. Make time for self-care activities like exercise, meditation, or simply enjoying a quiet moment whether you’re alone, or just scrolling. By nurturing your physical and mental health, you’ll be better equipped to handle the demands of both entrepreneurship and motherhood. Practice mindfulness to stay present in the moment, whether you’re at work or with your family. I like to say “Be where your feet are” and that really helps me stay in the moment!
Balancing the roles of an entrepreneur and mother can be demanding, but it’s entirely possible with the right strategies. Prioritizing, effective time management, delegation, setting realistic goals, and practicing self-care can help you succeed in both areas of your life. Remember that perfection is not the goal – balance is. By following these strategies, you can be a successful entrepreneurial mother who thrives in both her business and family life.
